Climbing Wall Instructor
Climbing Wall Development Instructor
The Climbing Wall Instructor qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to supervise climbers on purpose built artificial climbing walls and boulders. It is ideal for people who work at climbing walls or at venues with permanent or mobile climbing towers.
There is also an optional Abseil Module (often run in conjunction with Climbing Wall Instructor training and assessment courses) which is all about supervising abseiling on artificial structures.
The Climbing Wall Instructor qualification does not include the skills and techniques required to teach lead climbing.
The Climbing Wall Development Instructor qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to develop climbers beyond the basic skills. This includes teaching lead climbing on indoor or outdoor artificial climbing walls and structures with fixed protection.
It builds on the skills gained through either the Climbing Wall Instructor or Rock Climbing Instructor qualifications, one of which must be held in order to access the scheme.
This qualification used to be called Climbing Wall Leading Award which was revised following a review and relaunched under this new name on 2nd April, 2018.
It was on an indoor climbing wall that we first experienced the sport for ourselves. During our courses we aim to use our knowledge of the sport to maximise your time spent with us, and we are able to bring a wealth of experience from our background in climbing and instructing . The role of the Mountain Training Climbing Wall Instructor and Climbing Wall Development Instructor has grown in importance in the development of climbing, so whether we are seeing you on training or assessment, you can be confident of beginning a worthwhile and important qualification.
The infographic below shows where each qualification sits on the Mountain Training pathway:
